Featured on FCM’s 2024-25 season brochure, many have asked for more information on this beautiful watercolor painting.
Denver artist Ed Natan painted “The Quartet” in 2017 upon the death of Walter Levin, founder of the internationally-accclaimed LaSalle Quartet (1947-1987). The LaSalle Quartet performed twice on FCM’s Chamber Series: January 8, 1959 and January 16, 1980.
Natan was related to Walter Levin, who was his father’s cousin. Natan’s father, and others in his family, were also artists and musicians, some of note. According to Natan, a life-long relationship with Levin, and the feelings he had for his avant-garde music, influenced him to be bold and expressive in my painting. “When I paint in the city, the cacophony of noise inspires me, or the random sounds of nature when painting a landscape. In my studio I often listen to Jazz. Its improvisation keeps me off-balance and more receptive to the surprises I feel when painting any subject.”
Natan’s paintings hang in many private homes and collections, and have been displayed at the Aspen Music Festival, Denver Art Museum shop, and are archived at The Western History Collection of the Denver Public Library. Some of his paintings have been collected by internationally acclaimed symphony conductor Marin Alsop, the Bancroft Family, and the Elie Wiesel Foundation.
Want to see more? Natan will have a booth at the annual Denver Students Art League Summer Art Market August 24-25. On September 28-29, he and his wife will participate in Central Park’s Open Studios from our home studios, along with other artists from their home studios.
