SUMMARY:Spirituals: The Root of American Music

Roger Holland\, II is a Teaching Associate Professor in Music and Religion and Director of The Spirituals Project at the Lamont School of Music\, University of Denver. A graduate of Union Theological Seminary in New York City where he received the Master of Divinity degree\, Roger also served as Artist-in-Residence and director of the Union Gospel Choir for over 13 years. In 2015 Union awarded him the Trailblazers Distinguished Alumni Award\, the first given to a graduate whose ministry is music\, for his contributions to the legacy of African American music. \nAdam Waite is the Minister of Music at Montview Boulevard Presbyterian Church. In addition to overseeing Montview’s broad musical and artistic programming\, Adam also conducts Montview’s Westminster Choir: an 80-voice mixed chorus that is the cornerstone of weekly worship.  Prior to joining Montview\, Adam lived and worked in the New York City area\, where he was Co-Artistic Director and Resident Conductor for Lyrica Chamber Music and the Director of Music at the Presbyterian Church of Chatham Township\, NJ. \n

DESCRIPTION:Gwenyth Aggeler is a classical guitarist whose performances have been described by the Cultural Voice of North Carolina as “full of energy” and “striking.” She is a laureate of several national and international competitions including the Peter Segal First Prize in the 2023 Philadelphia Classical Guitar Competition\, first prize in the University of Louisville Guitar Competition\, and first prize in the Domaine Forget de Charlevoix Guitar Competition. Gwenyth performed on NPR’s radio program From the Top in 2019 and was later featured in their livestream series.   Gwenyth is passionate about collaborating with composers to premiere new works for her instrument and has performed in two world premieres of works commissioned by the Baltimore Classical Guitar Society. \nGwenyth began playing guitar through an extracurricular program at her elementary school. DESCRIPTION:One of the world’s most renowned string quartets\, performing to sold-out concert halls around the world\, the Danish String Quartet returns for a third time to the Chamber Series. Musical America’s 2020 Ensemble of the Year\, the quartet will perform works by Mozart and Shostakovich as well as folk music from around the world. \nOn October 8\, the Danish String Quartet was awarded the $150\,000 Léonie Sonning Music Prize. The quartet is the first ensemble to ever win the accolade\, which is usually awarded to individual artists.
