PROGRAM NOTES (PDF)

Over the years, Friends of Chamber Music has presented all 16 Beethoven Quartets, but never the complete cycle as a single “event.” The Pacifica Quartet, making its fourth Friends of Chamber Music appearance, has been selected to perform all 16 quartets, with performances bridging two seasons. Not only are these quartets masterpieces in their own right, but they also clearly outline the course of Beethoven’s creative career. The Grammy award-winning Pacifica Quartet, named Ensemble of the Year by Musical America, is dedicated to performing cycles of various composers’ works and will also present the complete Beethoven cycle at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2011-2012.
